UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup What You Should Do / Best Practices If You Use UpdraftPlus Given these known vulnerabilities, here are recommendations to safely use (or upgrade) UpdraftPlus: Check your version Find out which version of UpdraftPlus (free or premium) you currently have installed. If ≤ 1.24.12, or in any of the vulnerable version ranges above, you should consider it unsafe. Upgrade to the Latest version Ensure you upgrade to a version where the above vulnerabilities are patched (e.g. 1.25.1 or later for the reflected XSS, and ≥ 1.24.12 for the PHP object injection fix). Prefer to upgrade as soon as possible, in a staging environment first if possible. Test after upgrade After updating, test your backup/restore functionality thoroughly. Especially test pages or endpoints that use initiate_restore, showdata, AJAX backup settings, etc. Secure user roles / limit access Only trusted administrators should have capability to run backups, restore, or change backup settings. Restrict access to UpdraftPlus settings pages and AJAX endpoints to administrative users. Sanitize / validate any custom code If you wrote custom code that interacts with UpdraftPlus (e.g. via hooks, filters), ensure input is sanitized and outputs escaped properly. Avoid exposing UpdraftPlus internals or parameters to users in a way that could be manipulated. Disable or lock dangerous endpoints If possible, limit or disable endpoints / actions like initiate_restore or direct showdata access unless absolutely necessary. Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) / security plugin A firewall or security plugin (e.g. Wordfence, Sucuri) may block exploit attempts, suspicious input or known attack patterns. Backup your backups / use external storage Store your backups offsite (S3, Dropbox, etc.), not solely on your server, to reduce risk if the site is compromised. Keep multiple versions of backups (don’t overwrite immediately) so you have fallback. Monitor for new vulnerabilities & changelog updates Keep an eye on UpdraftPlus changelog, security advisories, CVE databases, WPScan, etc. Use plugin vulnerability scanners to detect if your version is flagged. Backup before updating or making changes Before upgrading UpdraftPlus (or WordPress/plugins), make a manual backup (outside UpdraftPlus if possible) so you can roll back if something goes wrong. How Safe Is It (in Summary) UpdraftPlus is a widely used, mature plugin, which is good — it has a large user base and the maintainers are aware of security issues. However, because it handles backup / restore / site migration operations, vulnerabilities in it can be especially damaging. The known vulnerabilities (PHP object injection, XSS, privilege escalation, backup download bypass) are serious, especially on sites that are not updated or expose UpdraftPlus admin endpoints to many users. If you are using a recent, fully patched version, and you follow best practices (restrict access, sanitize inputs, use security measures), UpdraftPlus can still be a strong tool. But using an old or unpatched version is dangerous.
